Self-employment presents considerable challenges.

Self-employment makes different demands on the individual compared with wage employment. To succeed in self-employment, an individual needs:

  • Initiative, determination and tenacity
  • Solid entrepreneurial skills
  • The ability to relate well to customers
  • A good business sense, and
  • A quality concept

These qualities and skills can be learned through appropriate training, so it is essential for CBR to facilitate and, if necessary, arrange such training when it is needed.

To succeed in self-employment, a person with disabilities will also often need the support of family and community.
