In some instances people have access to social protection in the form of social welfare or a pension, whether from the state, a private scheme or both. For people with disabilities social protection measures may include compensation, income maintenance, cost of care or financial assistance such as mobility allowances.
In other settings, persons with disabilities must rely on informal systems of social protection rooted in the family and local community.
