Identifying “people with disabilities”

Page 16/40

Individual experiences of disability are extremely varied. There are different kinds of impairments, and people are affected in different ways.

  • Some people have one impairment, others have multiple impairments.
  • Some are born with an impairment, others may acquire an impairment in the course of their life.
  • People may experience many different types of disability, including:
  • a hearing disability
  • a visual disability
  • an intellectual disability
  • a psychosocial disability

Disability also cuts across all other characteristics, such as sex, age and ethnic background. Whichever group you work with, some people in that group are likely to experience disability.

Remember that CBR is relevant to all people with disabilities.
