People with disabilities need to be able to access justice on an equal basis with others, but they are often prevented from doing so by discriminatory attitudes. They need to be aware of their rights, and the way the justice system works. Those working in the justice sector need to be sensitive to the needs of people with disabilities. Both formal and informal methods of achieving justice should be considered.
This section provides information about some of the concepts related to access to justice for people with disabilities and suggestions on how CBR can help to overcome the barriers that people with disabilities may face when trying to access justice. The participation of people with disabilities in the administration of justice, as witnesses, jurors, and lawyers is also important but is not covered here.
