Overcoming barriers

Page 5/5

People with disabilities often face difficulties in building relationships because of problems they encounter in communicating with others or in their mobility outside their homes. The main barrier for social relations, and especially for marriage and family relations, is the stigma and negative social attitudes attached to disability. Because of this, it is relatively rare in some societies to see a person with disability managing to lead an active social life, marry and have children. This is even much more pronounced for women with disabilities. Disability in the family may even affect marriage chances for non-disabled family members due to the fear that disability could be genetically inherited in the family.
