Early childhood covers the period from birth to the age of eight years. Expanding early childhood care and education is one of the six “Education for All” goals of UNESCO). Early childhood care and education includes a broad range of activities and provisions.

Because many aspects of childhood care are covered in the Health component, this element mainly focuses on early childhood education and incorporates early intervention and preschool and kindergarten.

Education in early childhood is important because of its influence on development. The early years, between birth and age three, provide a “window of opportunity” to lay the foundations for the healthy development of language, social ability, thinking and physical skills.
