Desirable outcomes

People with disabilities can access:

  • all necessary medical care, with the same range, quality and standard of care provided for other people, including the area of sexual and reproductive health;
  • surgical care to minimize or correct impairments, thus contributing to improved health and functioning.

People with disabilities and their families are able to:

  • access activities aimed at the early identification of health conditions and impairments (screening and diagnostic services);
  • develop self-management skills that enable them to:
    • ask questions
    • discuss treatment options
    • make free and informed decisions about medical care
    • manage their health conditions.

CBR personnel are:

  • knowledgeable about medical care services;
  • able to facilitate referrals for people with disabilities and their families for general or specialized medical care needs.

Within the medical community:

  • medical care facilities are inclusive, and fully accessible for people with disabilities;
  • medical care personnel are aware of the medical needs of people with disabilities, and respect their rights and dignity;
  • medical care is always provided based on free and informed consent.
