Introduction to medical care

Medical care can be defined as the identification, assessment and treatment of health conditions and resulting impairments. Medical care can:

  • provide a cure, as in the treatment of leprosy or malaria
  • reduce the impact of a health condition, as in the treatment of epilepsy, and
  • prevent avoidable impairments, for example by treating diabetes to prevent blindness.

Access to quality medical care, when and as often as needed, is critical for maintaining good health and functioning, particularly for people with disabilities who may experience poor levels of health.
