Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that has existed for a very long time. Leprosy is caused by bacteria and, if left untreated, can cause progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Over 215,000 new cases were reported in 2013. While there is an effective cure for leprosy, it has been estimated that approximately 3 million people are living with leprosy-related disabilities.
